Amazon Devices Chief on Alexa, Ambient AI, LEO Satellites, and the Future After Smartphones

Amazon devices chief Panos Panay discusses Alexa adoption, the Alexa+ experience, and the design philosophy behind ambient AI wearables like Bee. He also shares updates on Amazon's LEO satellite service, reflects on product failures and comebacks, and offers his view on the future of smartphones and ambient computing.

■ Alexa and ambient AI
- Over half a billion connected Alexa endpoints and a couple hundred million using Alexa+.
- Increased conversational use, smart home routines, and dinner-table Q&A.
- Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse are ambient wearables with privacy controls and user-owned data.

■ Amazon devices and customer testing
- Panos uses many beta devices to understand customer experience.
- Mentions Kindle, Echo, Ring cameras, Blink, Eero, and the new Amazon Alexa tablet.

■ LEO satellites and future platforms
- Over 1,000 LEO satellites built and about 400 in orbit; broadband and direct-to-device services.
- Commercial contracts, including Delta and Apple SOS support.
- Smartphones are not disappearing; jobs shift to the best device, with an intelligence layer connecting them.

■ Failure and product lessons
- Willingness to fail and harvest learnings; Surface RT write-down and Ring/Doorbot Shark Tank rejection.
- Hold the vision while adapting direction and moving with speed.

The discussion is aimed at founders, product leaders, and technology strategists interested in customer-centric design, privacy-first ambient computing, and learning from failure. Viewers gain a framework for evaluating whether new products truly make life easier and how Amazon is approaching the post-smartphone era.
