A New Dwarf Planet Candidate Discovered at the Edge of the Solar System
▼
The Vera Rubin Observatory has identified a new trans-Neptunian object designated 2026 ED138, potentially large enough to be classified as a dwarf planet. The discovery emerged from data processing of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), and the object's orbit and path have been tracked and characterized based on current observations.
■ Discovery of 2026 ED138
- Location beyond Pluto's orbit at the outer edge of the solar system
- Found through LSST data processing and orbit tracking
- Preliminary absolute magnitude of about 2.9
■ Comparison with Known Bodies
- Brighter than Ceres, the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt (roughly 1,000 km in diameter)
- Greater brightness may indicate a larger size, but this remains unconfirmed
- Spectroscopic analysis by other telescopes needed to rule out unusually high reflectivity
■ Dwarf Planets in the Solar System
- Seven dwarf planets currently recognized
- Ongoing search for additional candidates in the outer solar system
This is suited for viewers interested in astronomy news and solar system discoveries. Watching provides an understanding of how new distant objects are detected, how their brightness is interpreted, and what steps remain before an object can be confirmed as a dwarf planet.
