Israeli Settler Attacks on Palestinian Olive Harvest in the Occupied West Bank

A BBC News segment reports on filmed attacks by masked Israeli settlers on Palestinians harvesting olives near the occupied West Bank village of Abu Falah, with trees set on fire and gunshots audible. It features correspondent John Donis, recently returned from the West Bank, and Palestinian human rights activist Issa Amro of Youth Against Settlements. The discussion covers the context of settler violence, the olive harvest’s importance, and Israeli and international responses.

■ Reported attack and context
- Masked settlers attacked farmers and burned olive trees near Abu Falah, with Israeli military vehicles at the scene.
- Correspondent John Donis describes a surge in settler violence, daily incidents, and UN reports of an all-time high.

■ Settler outposts and impact on the olive harvest
- Outposts are described as illegal under international law and Israeli law, but later legalized under Israeli law.
- The olive harvest is a vital livelihood; attacks are said to have affected more than 147,000 olive trees in the occupied West Bank over two years.

■ Israeli and international responses
- The Israeli government and US are described as treating the violence as the work of a few individuals, not the broader settler community.
- International condemnation is noted, and the segment questions why the Israeli army does not stop the attacks.

■ Palestinian activist perspective
- Issa Amro argues the violence is widespread and coordinated with the Israeli military, affecting homes, land, and transportation.
- He calls for concrete accountability for the occupation and illegal settlements, not only verbal condemnation.
