Europe’s Protest Wave: France Unrest and Wider Political Fallout

An episode of BBC’s The Global Story examines recent unrest in France and protests in several European countries, with BBC Europe editor Katya Adler joining hosts Tristan Redmond and Asma Khaled to distinguish peaceful demonstrations from organized violence and to assess political reactions in Europe and the United States.

The discussion covers the escalation in French cities, including looting and clashes, and the French government’s response; claims by US officials linking the unrest to immigration and open borders; and common economic grievances such as cost of living, housing, public services, and youth concerns. It also places the protests in a wider European context, including events in Italy, Albania, Portugal, and Spain, and considers pressures from debt, elections, energy, defense, and geopolitical uncertainty.
