BBC Global News Podcast: Israel's Election Deadlock and Its Implications for the Middle East

The BBC World Service's Global News podcast examines the outcome of Israel's first general election since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and the war with Iran. With most votes counted, neither Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing bloc nor opposition leader Gaddy Eisenot's change bloc secured the 61 seats needed for a majority, leaving the country in political deadlock.

■ The Election Outcome
- Voter turnout at its highest in decades, held amid war, settler violence in the West Bank, and pressure over Gaza's humanitarian crisis
- Netanyahu's bloc holds 54 seats, down from 68 in the previous election
- Eisenot's bloc is at 49 seats, with no clear path to forming a government
- Absentee ballots, including votes from soldiers, are expected to delay the final result until Thursday
- The president will decide who gets the first attempt at building a coalition

■ Arab Parties and Domestic Politics
- Arab Israeli parties win an unprecedented 17 seats as turnout among the roughly 21% Arab minority rises sharply
- Most Jewish opposition parties have ruled out entering a coalition with them

■ What This Means for Palestinians
- A BBC Arabic contributor outlines the consensus among Zionist parties on Gaza's demilitarization and reconstruction
- Differences emerge over settler violence in the West Bank and settlement expansion
- The debate over Palestinian statehood, with most major parties now opposed to it
